Body Contouring
Lifestyle, pregnancy, weight loss and ageing itself can steal our body's youthfulness. Body contouring is a term to describe a variety of procedures, working with a healthier lifestyle to help return a more youthful profile to the face, abdomen, waistline, thighs and arms.
If you still have elastic skin then significant improvements can be made using just liposuction or liposculpture. In some cases surgery is needed to improve contours.
Procedures used to reach this goal include abdominoplasty (also called a tummy tuck), arm reduction (brachioplasty), thigh reduction and fat grafting, in addition to liposuction.
-
Abdominoplasty:
loose tummy skin and lax tummy muscles can be improved by an abdominoplasty procedure customized to your needs. Stretch marks and scars from Caesarian births can be removed as well. This procedure is also necessary in cases where substantial weight loss has resulted in loose abdominal skin.
-
Arm and Thigh Reduction:
some patients develop loose skin on the upper arms and inside of the thighs as a result of weight loss and aging. Thigh and arm reduction surgeries remove this excess skin, improving contour but does leave some scarring.
-
Liposuction:
stubborn areas of fat that remain despite dieting and exercise can be removed by liposuction, a process which permanently reduces fat. This is done through tiny puncture holes with use of hollow tube or canulae. It is important to remember that liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss.
Abdominoplasty
A smooth flat tummy is most people’s perception of an attractive youthful body. Unfortunately, the abdomen is one of the first places where weight gain becomes apparent. In women, particularly due to pregnancies or previous surgery, this can frequently be associated with relaxation of the abdominal wall muscles and leave excess skin. Abdominoplasty or a ‘tummy tuck’ is a range of procedures designed to remove skin and fat and tighten a sagging abdominal wall.
If the problem is excess fat then liposuction alone may suffice. If there is excess skin and fat confined to below the button, then a mini-abdominoplasty may be suitable and can be performed as a day stay procedure.
The standard or ‘full’ abdominoplasty tightens the abdominal skin and muscles and requires general anaesthesia with overnight hospital stay. The resulting scar is hidden but quite long, running from hip to hip and is about 3 times as long as a caesarean scar. Recovery can be uncomfortable for a few days. It will take about 2-3 weeks to return to light duties and about 4-6 weeks to normal strenuous activities.

Brachioplasty (Arm Reduction)
Brachioplasty or arm reduction is a procedure where excess skin is removed from the upper arm, the so called ‘bat wings’. These are normally the result of weight loss. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia with an overnight day. The resulting scar runs from armpit to near the elbow and is placed in the most inconspicuous location (inner arm), but the patient has to accept that some scarring may always be visible. In milder cases, it may be possible to limit the length of the scar.

Fat Transfer
Using fat to improve appearance has been available for many years, but one of the problems encountered had been variability of the outcome. However, recent advances have led to much more reliable results. The fat restores volume and youthful shape of the face and other parts of the body, and helps to improve the quality of the skin.
Mr Rayatt uses this technique on patients for both aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. Fat transfer can be performed either under a general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic, depending on the amount needed. The fat is removed from a part of the body where it will not be missed, usually tummy or thighs, in a manner similar to liposuction but in a much gentler manner so as not to damage the cells. It is then concentrated using a centrifuge and injected carefully back into the areas to be treated using fine blunt cannulae. Smaller areas can be treated in one session but larger amounts may take 2-3 sessions, about 3 months apart. Most common use is on the face, but excellent results can also be seen in other areas such as breast, buttocks, for scars and on the back of the hands.

Labiaplasty
Everyone is different but if you feel that your genital area is abnormal then you may benefit from a labiaplasty. Large or floppy labia may cause embarrassment or hygiene problems. Labiaplasty is designed to remove excess labia minora or “small lips” of the vulva. Thin labia majora or outer lips can be result of ageing or weight loss, and can be improved with fat grafting.
The surgery can be performed under a local or general anaesthetic. Mr Rayatt prefers to reshape rather than simply excise excess tissue but he will thoroughly discuss your needs before the procedure. Sometimes the clitoris is mostly covered with skin (clitoral hooding), and this maybe reduced if desired. Dissolving stitches are used and variable swelling is to be expected after the surgery. Sexual activity may be resumed after 2-3 weeks.

Liposuction
Liposuction is a procedure that permanently removes fat from the body using fine tubes and suction. However It is not a substitute for weight loss and healthy eating. It is a method of removing stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to exercise and tend to accumulate with age. These areas are the flanks, lower abdomen and thighs in women and abdomen and flanks and chest in men. It is also a useful technique to change the contours of your body in areas such as under the chin, waist, hips and thighs.
Smaller areas can be treated under sedation, however larger areas will require a day case general anaesthetic. A tumescent technique is used, involving injecting the areas to be treated with fluid containing local anaesthetic and adrenalin. Small puncture wounds are made in the skin to allow insertion of the fine suction tubes to remove the fat. Dressings or a compression garment has to be worn after the surgery. The pressure garments should be worn for about 4 weeks. Initial discomfort is controlled by oral painkillers and swelling subsides in 2-4 weeks.

Thigh Reduction
Thigh reduction surgery can improve the appearance of the thighs by the removal of fat and skin from the front and inside of the upper thigh.
Loose skin on the upper thigh can be the result of weight loss or simply ageing. The appearance can be improved by combination of liposuction and excising skin and fat from the upper inner part of the thigh. In most cases this leaves a scar at the top of the inside leg that can be hidden by modest underwear or bathing costumes. In some cases with a lot of excessive skin and fat, it may be necessary to leave a vertical scar on the inside of the thigh extending down to the knee.
